Special Class and Lecture Offerings

The Fun House

Remember visiting the fun house? Spend an afternoon exploring what fun means to us through a writing and reminiscing workshop. There’s a lot to learn and enjoy on this four-hour tour. Bring a pen or pencil, paper, snacks to share and your desire for some merriment. We’ll talk, we’ll write, we’ll laugh.  (Fri, June 12, 12 - 4 pm, $15)

Line Dancing - Fun, Fun, Fun!

In these fun dance classes, you will learn line dances to a variety of music like swing, rock and roll, waltz, zydeco and western. We’re offering both a beginning and intermediate level class, so there is something for everyone who loves to move to music. Exercise never felt like such fun! Self-Help Acupressure for Depression

Have you been feeling a little down in the dumps lately? Find out what you can do at home to effectively assist with feelings of depression through acupressure. Learn how to select, locate and self-treat acupressure points to start feeling better. The instructor, Dr. Marc Imlay, past President of the Acupuncture Association of Washington, has practiced acupuncture for 20 years. (Wed, June 17, 11am-12pm, free)

All About Vitamin D

Vitamin D has been making headlines recently. Get ready for summer by coming to this health lecture to learn why we need vitamin D, how we can get enough and why we need to be extra conscious of our vitamin D intake in not-so-sunny Seattle. Dietician Tricia Clement from Northwest Hospital will present and answer any questions you may have. (Wed, June 24, 1 - 2 pm, free)

Healing Grief

Music can take us to a place beyond words. Presenter Linda Chitty will facilitate this meeting where you can learn more about a six-week program offered by Swedish Hospital that uses classical music and individual imagery expressed on paper to help grieve the death of a loved one. (Wed, July 8, 1 - 2 pm, free)

Self-Help Acupressure for Chronic Hip Pain

Do you have chronic pain in your hip joints? Learn how you can safely and effectively manage this pain through acupressure. Get information on how to select, locate and self-treat acupressure points to help alleviate your symptoms. Dr. Marc Imlay will present. (Wed, July 15, 11 am-12 pm, free)

Processing Loss

Whether it’s a loved one, a pet or a stock portfolio, loss can be depressing and painful. Worst of all, we’re often left alone with our memories. In this workshop, you get to bring your loss with you: revel in the good things, regret the bad and feel accompanied in this journey by others who understand. Bring snacks to share. Facilitated by Ariele Huff. (Fri, Aug 21, 10 am-2 pm, $15)

Brain Health Matters

The following free brain health activities are available this quarter. Our Brain Health Matters programming is made possible by a grant from the Norcliffe Foundation and sponsorship support from Northgate Plaza, a Merrill Gardens Community and Merrill Gardens at Northgate.

You & Wii, presenting a series of Wii Workshops

Have you been hearing about the Nintendo Wii and wanting to give it a try? Good news! We are offering Wii Workshops every Monday and Wednesday afternoon this summer so you can do just that. Sign up for a workshop (they are limited to 4 participants) and come give it a whirl. We have dedicated volunteers on hand to help show you the ropes, how to navigate the controls and get you started playing. The Wii is a ridiculous amount of fun and a great way to get moving. POSIT Demos

The GSC is very excited to be one of the first senior centers in the country to have the POSIT Science Brain Fitness Program available for the community. This revolutionary program features a variety of simple auditory-based computerized exercises designed to improve cognitive function. Want to check out this new brain health program in the computer lab and see if it’s right for you? Call the GSC and ask for Liz - she’ll set up an appointment for you to come and meet with one of the coaches and see if this program meets your needs (Call (206) 297-0875 and set up an appointment with Liz. The demo is free; there is a fee if you decide to participate in the program.)

Purpose & Meaning in Later Life

Come view a video of the 2nd annual Positive Aging Conference. We will discuss positive aging and how to achieve purpose, meaning and vitality in the second half of life.

Aging with Optimism Follow-up Meeting

Our dialogue on Aging with Optimism continues with this meeting and discussion. Using Richard Cohen’s book, Strong at the Broken Places, we will discuss views on challenges and opportunities as we age with a chronic illness or disability. The book is available from the library. It is in paperback and on CD. Please join us, whether or not you have read the book. Carin Mack, MSW, and Joseph Ranieri, MSW, and keynote speaker from the Aging with Optimism Town Hall will co-facilitate the discussion.
