Special Class and Lecture Offerings

Line Dancing - Fun, Fun, Fun!

In this fun dance class, you will learn line dances to a variety of music like swing, rock and roll, waltz, zydeco and western. This class is open to all levels of dancers, so there is something for everyone who loves to move to music. Exercise never felt like such fun! Benefits include more flexibility, better balance, stronger muscles and improved body awareness. Registration required. Call (206) 297-0875 to sign up. Nourish Your Body

Afternoon fatigue? Food cravings? Too much anxiety and irritation? Dr. Allott will explain why these are happening and give you the tools to feel better. Plus, food tools to help with anxiety and irritation interfering with work. Dr. Allot specializes in the non-pharmaceutical interventions for depression, anxiety, addictions and sugar addictions. (Thurs, Dec 10, 1-2pm)

Care Transitions

Come learn about a new program being offered by CareForce that helps people with complex care needs learn self-management skills to ensure their needs are met during the transition from hospital to home. People who receive this program re significantly less likely to be readmitted to the hospital after discharge.(Mon, Jan 25, 1pm, free)

Brain Health Matters

The following free brain health activities are available this quarter. Our Brain Health Matters programming is made possible by a grant from the Norcliffe Foundation and sponsorship support from Northgate Plaza, a Merrill Gardens Community and Merrill Gardens at Northgate.

Alzheimer's: A Personal Perspective

Hear the personal story of a man in his fifties who was diagnosed with early onset, early stage Alzheimer's Disease approximately two years ago. He will share the story of his journey so far and will participate in a question and answer session as well. Presentation will be on Thursday, Jan 14 at 2pm.

Memory Screening Program

A new, first-in-the-state community program will make the detection of memory problems and doctor follow-up widely available to seniors in Phinney/Greenwood. With help from the Harvest Foundation, the GSC purchased Screen Inc.’s Onsite Memory Testing System, a computerized test that screens for memory problems and sends the results to the person’s doctor. You & Wii, presenting a series of Wii Workshops

Have you been hearing about the Nintendo Wii and wanting to give it a try? Come over to the GSC on December 9th at 2pm to give it a try. Sign up today by calling (206) 297-0875. After December 9th, the wii will be available to practice with every Wednesday at 2pm if you call ahead first.

POSIT Demos

The GSC is very excited to be one of the first senior centers in the country to have the POSIT Science Brain Fitness Program available for the community. This revolutionary program features a variety of simple auditory-based computerized exercises designed to improve cognitive function. Want to check out this new brain health program in the computer lab and see if it’s right for you? Call the GSC and ask for Liz - she’ll set up an appointment for you to come and meet with one of the coaches and see if this program meets your needs (Call (206) 297-0875 and set up an appointment with Liz. The demo is free; there is a fee if you decide to participate in the program.)

Carin's Special Offerings

Powerful Tools for Caregivers

This six-week educational program provides family caregivers of older adults with long term conditions the skills and confidence to provide better care for themselves and their loved ones. Registration is required and class is limited to 12 participants. There is no fee for the class, but the Caregiver Helpbook will be available for purchase.

Getting Out of Bed in the Morning

As we age, our purpose in life may change. Yet life needs purpose and meaning to fuel the body as much as it needs food. This session will explore how to identify and nurture our life essentials.
